Sailing is a fantastic leisure activity where the family can be together

Sailing in a sailboat

For many sailors, sailing and the sport of sailing is a lifestyle. A sailboat can be used for both short trips in the local area, longer vacation trips around Denmark, or even for circumnavigating the globe.

On board, the sailboat is steered and maneuvered by a crew where at least a couple of them must have sailing experience.

Is a sailboat right for me?

As a sailor, you pursue an active leisure lifestyle that requires you to enjoy being outdoors.

On a sailboat, you can truly unplug from everyday life while enjoying the peace and, not least, the freedom on the water – or be challenged by the elements.

You must take an interest in planning, navigation, wind, and weather, and be able to get along with others in a small space.

Is it dangerous to sail?

No – when you are trained as a sailor or take up sailing at a sailing club, there are skilled instructors who are trained to instruct with a focus on safety.

And especially in the beginning, the focus is on making new sailors feel safe, so that right from the start of their sailing careers, they learn to work together and help one another —and as you gain more experience, you’ll also become able to assess your own abilities in relation to wind and weather.

At sailing school, you learn how to handle a sailboat, as well as about wind and weather conditions, and you practice ”man overboard maneuvers”

The practical training on the water can then be supplemented with theoretical instruction for the Certificate of Competency, where you learn everything about navigation, navigational aids, sound and light signals, etc.

How do I learn to sail?

The sailing school at Aabenraa Sailing Club offers lessons for adult beginners who want to learn how to sail and maneuver a sailboat.

A fixed crew typically consists of 3-4 new sailors and an instructor from the club. The training takes place in the boats on Aabenraa Fjord, where participants sail one evening per week for about two hours during a season. The training starts the first week of May and runs until the end of September (there is a break of about four weeks during the holiday period).

The sailing school at Aabenraa Sailing Club offers several programs

Level 1: is designed for beginners and focuses on the basics of sailing and handling a sailboat—as well as knowledge of wind and weather and safety at sea

Level 2: is aimed at the slightly more experienced sailor, or sailors who have completed Level 1

Regatta: This program is designed for experienced sailors who either want to learn to race or for sailors with racing experience who want to race with others in a modern sportsboat equipped with a gennaker. The focus here is on boat optimization, trim, racing technique, and teamwork.

Lessons

There are sailings once a week – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, starting at 18:00 and ending at approx. 20:00.

The goal is to form groups so that the students have roughly the same background.

Instruction takes place in the club's two J80 boats – a modern sports boat with a large and functional cockpit. In addition to the instructor, there is room for 4 students per boat.

The racing teams sail on Tuesdays or Thursdays throughout the season.

Prices

Participation fee: See the rate sheet

The course fee includes course materials and club membership valid for the entire duration of the course.

Membership is essential for insurance coverage when sailing in the club's boats, and the fee must therefore be paid before the first sailing evening.

Members are free to use the club's facilities (restrooms, kitchen, etc.). The door code will be provided at the start of the season.

There are life jackets on board for all participants.

Registration/Questions

If you have registered your interest, you will be invited to an informational meeting, which is typically held in early April.

At the end of the meeting, you must decide whether you wish to participate.

Shortly after the meeting, we'll collect the registrations and form the teams.

You don't have to pay the fee until you've received confirmation that you've been accepted into a class, and you'll be notified about how to pay.

So start by sending an email to the sailing school with your name, address, and phone number. In addition, you’re welcome to include:
- whether you are a beginner or have some experience, and if so, how much
- Which days of the week (evenings) work best for you to sail… possibly with several options (1st, 2nd, and 3rd priority)

Learn to Sail

If you'd like to learn how to sail, the Aabenraa Sailing Club invites you to an information session about the club's sailing school.

We hold informational meetings at the end of March every year.

The School's Goals

  • To enhance maritime safety.
  • To make students proficient cruising sailors with the main emphasis on safety on board, both during port maneuvers and in open water.
  • That the students pass the practical part of the Danish Maritime Authority's proficiency test for recreational sailors.
  • To enable participants to race after acquiring the basic skills.
  • To create a mutual sense of responsibility and balance between the club and the member regarding requirements and opportunities. It is emphasized that the obligation goes both ways.
  • That the members of the Sailing School actively contribute to the organization of the club's activities.
  • To provide social/shared activities so that the department functions as a whole, with room for respect for individual differences.

Safety instruction

Aabenraa Sailing Club's sailing school teaches based on the 10 safety tips of nautical sports:

  1. Check the weather conditions
  2. Maintain the rescue equipment
  3. Don't cause worry: Call home
  4. Maintain the boat
  5. Learn to swim
  6. Yield way to large vessels
  7. Learn to Sail
  8. Stay with the boat if it capsizes
  9. Learn the rules of the road at sea
  10. Don't mix alcohol and boating

Classes are taught using the Danish Sailing Association's educational material, including the safety procedures found within it. Everyone wears a life jacket throughout the entire sail.

Students are encouraged to learn how to swim when they begin the training course. At Aabenraa Sailing Club's sailing school, the standard procedure for a man overboard (MOB) is the figure-eight maneuver, as documented in the Danish Sailing Association's material.

Sailing is only permitted when an instructor is on board. The instructor must be appointed/approved by the school management. This also applies if the boats are loaned out for other purposes.

When sailing outside of scheduled training evenings, notice must be submitted before departure regarding:

Who is on board:
Expected departure: date and time
Expected return: date and time

Information will be sent by email, at least to the chairman, but preferably to all instructors.

The boats' safety equipment includes:

  • Handheld flashlight
  • Castline
  • Emergency flares/distress rockets
  • Anchor and anchor line
  • Compass
  • First aid kit
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Tool incl. knife
