Who can participate in the kayaking course?

A weekend course in sea kayaking is aimed at you who want to learn how to paddle in a safe and secure manner. We go through everything necessary in a safe environment, and no prior experience is required to participate. You must be at least 15 years old to participate.

A safe start

You learn the basic rowing and rescue techniques so you are able to help yourself and others in the event of a capsize.

We also focus on correct technique and injury-preventing rowing so you get the most out of the trip. The exercises take place under safe conditions and with expert instruction from trained sea kayak instructors.

The course gives you a solid basic knowledge of kayaking and enables you to paddle sea kayaks in coastal waters.

As a member of Aabenraa Sailing Club, you can purchase a subscription that gives you the right to borrow one of the club's sea kayaks.

Safety Rules for the Aabenraa Sailing Club's Kayak Division

The following safety rules apply to all activities conducted at the club. It is the responsibility of all members to be familiar with and follow these safety rules when participating in club activities or borrowing the club’s kayaks.

1. Participation in club events and trips.

On all trips during club nights and other club events, the committee has appointed one or more trip leaders. It is expected that all participants on these trips follow the trip leader's instructions. All participants must wear seasonally appropriate clothing and wear an approved life jacket.

1a. Paddling on your own (without a tour guide) in the club’s kayaks must be arranged with the committee and is permitted only by special arrangement.

2. Safety factors.

• Released rowers can row in the club's name in the period from the raising of the standard to the lowering of the standard.
• Members who are in training can, by agreement with the trip leader, join trips depending on the weather and wind.
• New members and beginners can try paddling under the guidance of an instructor.

Renting Club Kayaks

• When borrowing a boat, the name and boat number must be recorded on the board in the boathouse, along with the user's name and phone number, the departure and return times, and the route.
• To borrow club kayaks, the user must be certified as a rowing novice; “rowing novice” means that the user has completed the DGI Rowing 1 course or possesses equivalent skills.
• Club kayaks may not be loaned to third parties; that is, members who are not active rowers may not lend them to friends who are not members of the club.
• Any defects or damage to the borrowed kayak must be noted on the damage report form in the clubhouse.
• Rented kayaks must be returned clean and emptied of water.

For all members recommended In addition:

• Do not paddle alone.
• Check the weather forecast: Air temperature, wind speed and direction, water temperature
• Paddle close to shore, and watch out for offshore winds.
• Be aware of your own abilities and paddle ”at your own pace.”
• Wear clothing appropriate for the season, and consider bringing extra dry underwear.

3. Liability 


For all members participating in club events and trips, it is the members' own accident insurance that covers accidents during participation in club events.

The club's instructors and the club as a whole are covered by the joint sports insurance (Idrætternes Fællesforsikring), which includes liability insurance for instructors performing voluntary work in the association.

Private kayakers and their own equipment used by club members are not covered by the club's insurance.

4. Equipment and Safety

Members must wear an approved life jacket and seasonally appropriate clothing so that they are able to rescue themselves, whether alone or as part of a group. At least one person in the group must bring the necessary safety equipment (cell phone and, if applicable, a tow rope).

5. Requirements for Tour Leaders/Instructors

The tour leader/instructor makes sure that the tour schedules are posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse.

The trip leader informs the participants about the trip's length, purpose, organization, safety conditions, etc., before the trip starts. Organization means, for example, that the group paddles together and stays close to the coast.

The tour leader must take into account the participants“ prerequisites as well as current weather conditions, and must have accounted for ”worst-case" scenarios on the planned trip.

The tour guide always brings relevant equipment as well as a mobile phone during the tour. Relevant equipment is understood to mean, for example, a tow line for rescuing a person to shore.

The tour leader ensures that the necessary equipment is included in the group in the form of mobile phones and tow ropes.
